According to our beloved Conservative government, Canada will no longer make efforts to prevent Canadian citizens from being executed in other countries as long as the trial was in a democratic country.

Traditionally, Canada will ask that a country like the United States either promise not to kill the Canadian, or to let him serve his life sentence in a Canadian jail. Likewise, we do not send American criminals to a state which carries the dealth penalty. It’s just not something we believe in. We’re not ok with it.

Until now.

I’m not saying murderers are good people or that they deserve to have nice duvets and scented candles in their room. What I am saying though, is that if we are a country that believes “an eye for an eye” is not appropriate, that we do not have the right to take another man’s life, that it’s better to have a guilty man live than an innocent man die… If we believe any of those statements, then how can we allow our citizens to be killed elsewhere?
