I hate to see people alone.
The man sitting at the bar, finishing up his last pint of lager as he checks his watch one last time, and concludes his “friends” won’t be turning up as they promised.
The fat girl sitting in the cinema with her oversized tub of popcorn and family-sized carton of pepsi, holding them close in the absence of other company or companionship.
The short kid trudging home from school, head down and staring at the ground ahead, avoiding eye contact with anyone in case they should want to fight him. Or worse, see his pain and weakness.
The girl that lied to her friends, or about her friends, who now don’t speak to her. She fights with them through the day, then cries herself to sleep at night, and can’t see a way to fix the situation.
The lad that wants to be accepted, that genuinely tries to be included, but tries a little too hard and makes people feel uncomfortable. He can’t make interesting conversation because he has had so little true interraction with peers; but will never improve, because nobody wants to spend time with him. People lie to him that the party is cancelled, or let him turn up at the wrong venue, because they want to avoid his company. Or worse again, because they find humour in his suffering.
These ideas make me feel a terrible ache… And a terrible fear that it will happen to me. How do you know if you’re one of these people?
I sit at my computer writing this on a Saturday evening, realising that I don’t have many close friends, and rarely get invited out any more.
Am I that poor lad I feel sorry for?
It occurs to me that one of my biggest fears in life is the fear of being alone.

My car mileage is GREAT. No, really… My Focus got 40.7 miles to the gallon this weekend! That’s 14.4 km/litre, or 6.94 litres to 100 km!! YAH!
Here‘s where I did all the coversions.

Noam Chomsky wrote an article last month discussing the tension between Iran and the US (mainly), and a possible solution to the situation. While he deals mostly with Iran in this article, I’m sure the same logic can be applied universally – for example to North Korea.
